Fantasy Football

You should have just received the email inviting you to join league.

The rules are pretty much the same. However, I made a few changes to increase the scoring a little bit. Similar to officials throwing the flag more often for illegal contact to WRs.

- This year there will be no delegated TE roster spot. Instead I added a TE/ WR spot that will allow you to start a WR or a TE. That way teams will not be penalized for not having one of the three best TEs in the league. I would name them, but why give you the knowledge for free?

- I added the RETURN YDS. category for teams to get points for WRs that also return punts and kicks.

- The point breakdown for QBs is standard, except I changed the completion yds./ point to 1 pt. for every 35 yds. thrown, down from 50 yds.

- For RBs (a much debated topic) I decreased the yardage output from 20 to 15. So now, for every 15 yds. a RB gains you will get 1 pt. People have asked in the past that it be even more lenient, but I believe points should be granted to TDs, not so much for yards gained. So if you draft ________ and you know he doesn't get the ball on the goaline, you shorted yourself.

- This year I changed the waiver for signing free agents to 1 day. That will allow teams to put claims in for a player, but the lowest ranking team that puts in a claim will receive the player. I think it kind of evens the gap between the good and bad teams.

- This year 6 teams will make the playoffs. If we happen to have 12 teams, the number will jump to 8.

- This year we will attempt to have a live draft. As of right now, I have set the date and time for Saturday, August 27th at 7 PM. Hopefully, this is enough time for everyone to get their schedules straight. A live draft seems to be easier than the automated one, until you are on the clock and have two minutes to select a player. The first 3 rounds are easy, but the middle rounds may have you acting like Minnesota and almost missing your pick.

B, pointed out that we want teams to be active throughout the season because it makes it better for everyone. The thing is, you really can't make someone play. But, you can check the option that allows me, The Commish, to edit your roster. That way if you are not near a computer, but need to make changes, I will be able to do it for you. I am not sure where this feature is located, but I believe it is during the registration process.

If you have any comments, concerns or questions holla at me by posting it on the homepage of our league.

Throwback Thoughts

I found a collection of things I had written on a BP page I had a few years ago. Some of them aren't as funny as I once thought. Some are just interesting because they kind of serve as a time stamp in my life. Hate them or Love them...

I`ve come to the realization that people want YOU to be a "team player" when THEY need you!

A customer at my [old] part time job asked me for a "sit-down" bike. But he got offended when I was like, "So you don`t want a 'stand-up' one?"

Time for Celebration...
The TWO best times to be a midget are CHRISTMAS & ST. PATRICK`s DAY!

Why? Two words: elves & leprechauns!

Whatever happened to home training? While it`s fuuny as hell, I`m tired of seeing parents getting cussed out by their kids!

Just After 9/11:
It`s been funny to see Middle Easterners with like a million AMERICAN flags on their cars & houses! I was in 7-11 one time and I asked the dude behind the counter, "How`s everthing going?" Dude started screaming "I LOVE AMER-RICA!! I LOVE AMER-RICA!!" I was okay, me too! But all I really wanted was a big bite.

I’m TIRED of SEEING…
People walking around the club for 2-3 hours with an empty bottle of Moet. If you were a real balla you wouldn’t need an empty bottle!

You ever been a club looked at somebody dancing and wondered what song they’re listening to? You see them mouthing the words, but their body indicates a whole different song.

Two things that don`t make sense...

A bird being scared of heights and a boater who can`t swim! I was watching a sports bloopers show and there was one in which a yacht was sinking and one of the crew members didn`t know how to swim! I was like WTF! That`s like skydiving without knowing how to pull the parachute chord!

equality...
Can you really talk about someone else who is in the same predicament as yourself--whether you like them or not! For instance, one of the girls that braids my hair was like "Look at that fat b!tch, She knows she needs to take that off her fat ass!" Then I looked at the chick braiding my hair and was like, "Hey dumbass, THAT`s A MIRROR! You were looking at yourself!"

Tips on Getting a Job:

If you have a hard time pronouncing easy words and names, then maybe--just maybe-- you shouldn`t apply to be a receptionist! The one at my [old] job can`t pronounce the word "THE" without stumbling over it at least once.

Why do bathroom doors have the PULL handle on the inside? Check it out... Going into some bathrooms you push the door to get in, but then after you`ve washed your hands (I hope everyone does!), you have to pull the door to get out. I know some of yall are like use the paper towel, but what about the bathrooms with those dryers? It seems to me that the pull would be on the outside and that the push would be on the inside! Let me know...

Fired for Blogging?

Shouts out to the Straight Shooter for putting me on to this article.

Recently, there have been a couple articles about people being fired for blogging. My initial reaction was "WTF?" I was really pressing my head wondering how someone could get fired for this. Then I read the articles and came to the conclusion that those people may have been idiots hiding behind their keyboard and computer screens. Well, maybe just some of them.

According to the article in USA TODAY, folks are getting fired for going to in-depth about their jobs and things going on within their companies. This is the idiot part in my humble opinion. I am confused as to why folks who know that things like that are inapropriate in email, would write these types of things in a blog. Especially when they are including their names and even pictures. Is it me or is the poster child for showing a lack of common sense. What employer is going to pay you to publicly attack them?

For the record, to avoid hypocrisy, I will admit to talking about an incident with a co-worker, but I think there is a small difference. I could be wrong, if so let me know. So, awhile back I spoke upon an incident where a co-worker was a little mad that I couldn't pick him up from the airport. Here's the thing though, I never mentioned his name, nor did I mention where I work or what we do. Granted, 99% of the people who read this blog know me personally. I just think that even if my company found out about my blog, they would be hard-pressed to find a reason to fire me. But, maybe that is exactly what the people in the articles were thinking. If it turns out that way, then so be it. I will happily take the 'L' in order to happily express exactly what it is I want to express. you have to pick and choose your battles, this is one I am armed to fight.

The second article I found on this topic was featured on the careers page on MSN. This article, with consultations of a blogger who has been fired, compiles a list of "Do's and Don'ts." The funniest one is "Don't hide it from your boss!" I find it funny cause how is that suppossed to transpire? Should I email him, send a link or just give him a head's up that I have a blog that once has centered around an experience of a co-worker. He would probably read the blog, but not like it. Not cause it was inappropriate in the scope of work, but because we just don't agree on many things.

Whatever the case may be, be safe when you blog. You could be risking your future with your company. I say use common sense and blog about things "off the clock" as I do. Hell, I spend 40+ hours at the job, I refuse to let it concern my life to the point where my blog is dedicated to "work."

Hopkins vs. Taylor

Round One Down

Thinking Hopkins might lose

Start of the 5th

Taylor being too aggressive, but fighting very well

5th round
Hopkins gave Taylor a part like it was '88

6th Round

Hopkins still has me nervous.

Start of the 9th Round

Hopkins has 4 rounds to win this. How is he going to do it?

10th Round

Finally some action. Hopkins hurt Taylor. Taylor laid up on him for a reason.

Begining of last round
I think Taylor has it by scorecards, so Hopkins is going to have to go all out.

End of fight:

Who wins?

My gut says Taylor, split decision.

Well, not that I am a boxing expert, but I was right. That makes Floyd Mayweather the best pound-for-pound fighter in the business today.

Talking to my brother earlier today, I said no champion goes out on top. It just never happens. Have to give the man his props though. Ten Years and 20 defenses is amazing.

Here's to the rematch...

Appreciation

Just wanted to take a minute to extend my appreciation for all who have stoopped by. Especially, if you actually came back, LOL!

I really do this for myself as a way to keep my writing skills so what up to par, until I find someone to pay me for it. Or at least create a means to generate my own income from it. Many never happen, but that is what dreams and goals are for.

I have a bunch of stuff that I want to address, I just haven't taken the time to get it down. Writing a blog is hard when your employer expects you to work the entire time you are there.

I make no promises but I am going to try to post something at least once every 2-3 days, starting next week. Stay tuned and if you think it is worthy, share the link with your peoples.

Again, I appreciate it!

Quick Hits: BET Awards

I finally saw the BET Awards last night. Overall it was cool, but I think last year was better. How can they compete with Monique checking the Ying Yang Twins or Rick James going off. Well they did have a crackhead moment...

* Lauryn Hill*
Nice to see that she actually showed up for an appearance. Unfortunately, she looked like Whitney Houston did at the 1st BET Awards. You know the one where she couldn't finish the song. Somehow Lauryn even sounded like Whitney as well. Her voice used to be powerful and confident, now it sounds like she has one of the Marley's dreadlocks caught in her throat.

There were times that it looked like she was going to pass out. Hell she even admitted it by claiming that they had gotten "overzealous" during rehearsal. Whatever Lauryn, if you say so. Try not to hit that Marley drug before you hit the stage.

I guess what's most sad is that her fractured voice sounded better than some of the other "talent" out there.

* The Rules*

Loved the rules. Nobody follows them, but what do you expect. People will always find a way to circumvent them. Perfect example: Mike Jones had his entire neighborhood up there. Even Fat Joe was out there. Since when did he start "Tippin'?"

*T.I.*
Whoever convinced him that "Bring 'Em Out" would be hot is you had a live band with Sheila E. on the drums has to be deaf. That shit sounded like The Game's son was playing on a Fisher Price keyboard. And for some reason the PSC click, who did the "Bring 'em out, bring 'em out" chorus off camera, sounded like they were learning English as a second language. They had the energy of Lauryn Hill on depressants.

* The Lap Dance*
I'm hearing a major fuss about the "lap dances" Destiny's Child put on Nelly, Terrence Howard and Magic. I thought it was innocent considering it was obviously contrived. Howard and Nelly were sitting right next to Mama Knowles. How convenient!

I do wonder how Michelle (who obviously is always a step behind) decided on Magic. Aren't lap dances- and taking them to the next level- how Magic got himself into the "position" he's in now? Maybe Michelle was trying to heal him with her voice.

The only thing more contrived was the Debra Lee comments about Bob Johnson. All of that was PR contrived to send subtle messages about her new leadership and to distance themselves. It is almost common knowledge that they have been doing the bedroom tango for years and the rumor mill turned up even louder when she was named as the new CEO. So the comments/ actions about "being a control freak" and "not saying what he told me to say," were all subtle messages to say "I'm running this show form now on and he won't be in my ear (or bed) telling me what to do!" Anything you say Deb!

DISCLAIMER: If either Bob or Debra happen to read this, I would like you to know that the previous paragraph was a very dumb attempt at humor. I apologize in advance if you will give me a good job. I hear AJ is trying to leave the network again, I would be willing to work with Free for FREE! Holla at your boy.

* Dwayne Martin*
Is it possible to have a mid-life crisis at 35? Seriously, how attention deprived are you to be rocking a mohawk? Aren't fashion risks usually reserved for fashionable people? Last time I checked no one was checking for him. Maybe "Gina" is getting on his nerves. Maybe he'll call Martin Lawrence to give her a call.

* Pauletta Washington*
See what happens when Denzel is away? She comes out looking like a bad Tina Turner impersonation. I was under the impression that millionaires had stylists. Maybe her stylist got the calendar mixed up and she thought it was Halloween. Now yall know why Denzel vetoed her singer career. He doesn't want her embarrassing the family name.

* The Overall Production*
Ummm... why in the hell did I see more production assistants than winners of the awards. Like 50% of the awards were won by folks who were absent.

Exhausted

So I just got back from Philly this morning and I am tired as hell. I was up there for 6 days working at a tradeshow for educators. The show was pretty good and Philly is a cool place to visit, so the trip itself was cool all-in-all.

There were a few perplexing moments however:

We stayed across the Ben Franklin Bridge in Cherry Hill, NJ. I don't know a lot about Jersey, but this had to be the worst city/ town ever. There is virtually no such thing as a left turn in Cherry Hill. You literally have to go right in some cock-a-mamie type of "U","V" shaped direction to make a left turn. And of course these turning contraptions aren't available at every street, so you may have to ride 3 extra miles just to go 200 feet into a restaurant's parking lot. The shit was ridiculous to say the least.

I'm not sure what the traffic and engineering departments of the state of NJ were thinking, but they all should be fired and sent back to kindergarten to first, learn shapes. Then, sent to Geometry 101 for concepts such as angles. Finally, a swift foot up the ass for stupidity. Then again, maybe to many feet up the ass lead to the state's governor (not sure if "former" should be in front of the title) making the announcement he did. LOL

I know. I know. That was a joke in bad taste, but what kind of expectations are you holding for this blog. Lower them now! lol

The other bullshit we faced was the strength of the union in Philly. No knock to unions (more on this later), but really I should be allowed to help set-up and dismanlte my company's booth. Because what happens when they do it wrong? We end up paying an hour's worth of extra time for them to correct what it was they did wrong in the first place. I understand the concept of protecting jobs in your city, but for logic's sake why should I be forced to pay an hour minimum's worth of time for something I can do in 10 minutes. It's not that I am smarter (cause I'm probably not), but there is the fact that I have set the booth up more times than they ever will. It's the experience that makes it both cheaper and easier for me to do the work. I guess my problem is that I hate being forced to sit in those hot halls waiting. It's like a slow day at work, the day just drags and minutes seem to pass slower than George Bush learning how to pronounce gnat or opossum.

Speaking of unions, there is a growing content against Wal-Mart and their outright contempt for their employees forming unions. Even the National Education Association (NEA) has joined the fight and asked parents and teachers to avoid shopping at Walmart for their school supplies. Veiwing their site lead me to a more interesting one. Apparently, Walmart has pissed people off so much that they have started an official campaign, complete with slogan and logo.

"Wake Up Walmart" is a campaign designed to publicize Walmart's shortcomings when it comes to paying their employees. There are some interesting facts and things addressed, but I do have a small problem with the campaign. But first, the stuff I found interesting:

Below the Poverty Level. In 2002, the federal poverty line for a family of three was $15,020 (Department of Health and Human Services.) Using the above estimates, a vast majority of Wal-Mart employees would be eligible for government programs. By paying wages that are below the poverty line and therefore forcing employees to rely on government welfare programs, Wal-Mart shifts costs to taxpayers, communities, and responsible employers.

High Turnover Results in Lower Wages. The Company reports that its U.S. turnover in 2002 was 45%. Based on these figures, 500,000 U.S. employees will leave the Company in 2003, and 540,000 new employees will need to be hired just to maintain the existing size of their labor force. In past years, turnover was even more extreme — in 1999, Company turnover was 70 percent (“Is Wal-Mart Too Powerful?”, Business Week, 10/6/03).

The world’s largest and richest retailer can afford wage increases. Wal-Mart could pay each employee a dollar more per hour if it increased its prices by a half-penny per dollar. For instance, a $2.00 pair of socks would then cost $2.01. This minimal increase would annually add up to $1,800 for each employee (UFCW estimate using the Drogin 2003 study).

Now back to my thoughts:

Okay. So Walmart is paying folks less than the national average for retail but well above the minimum wage. But really thinks they can really earn a living and support their family on even $10/ hour? That's not a Walmart issue, that is a United Stated issue. Their are millions of people considered the working poor who can not afford to get off of public assistance. Why? Because it is more feasible for their families because healthcare costs are ridiculous. And the sickest thing about it is that the healthcare industry has not cured a motherfuckin' thing since polio or some shit like that, but costs continue to rise. The other side of that coin is all the ridiculous lawsuits people have filed that have caused healthcare insurance costs to rise astronomically. So really Walmart is doing the same thing just to two different groups of people. Walmart is fleecing their employees. Healthcare is fleecing their patients.

Getting back to the original point, I am wondering if Walmart is being targeted so heavily because they do things as they see fit. They make the world come to them in Arkansas and they play by their own rules. Does McDonald's have a union? I don't know, so I'm asking. However unempathetic this may sound, but does anyone go into Walmart thinking this cashier's job is going to get me rich. Do they think the union will get them far enough above the poverty line to join the rest of us getting fleeced for healthcare in the US? Maybe they can, but it could turn into another self-serving organization who starts to with good intentions, but ends up with some type of pension plan fiasco. It is a 50/50 chance.

With that said, I do think Walmart could at least go halfway on some of their employee's wants. If it is true that a half cent per $1 increase in cost could lead to roughly $1800 more in earnings, then why not go for it? Why? Because it could effect the people Walmart is most concerned with (well, besides themselves)their customers. I am willing to bet that at least 50% of their business comes from people living beneath the poverty line. So the same people they are being threatened by are the same people they are servicing the most. Which side do you think is going to win? I remember a friend of mine in high school telling me how his uncle ran a 7-11 in the hood. He said his uncle told him one thing, "Treat people as nice as they treat you." Meaning, if they come into the store with respect, treat them with respect, but if they come in on some ignorant type tip, then give it back to them. Why? Because they had no where else to go! That 7-11 was their best choice. Walmart serves the same purpose to (my estimate) 50% of their clientele. They can't afford to shop in the "nicer" supercenters. And who can deny the fact that Walmarts prices for groceries are below most chains while their quality is pretty good. I don't think that "neighboorhood grocery stores" can always make that claim.

This is getting too long, so I am going to finish up by saying this. Those employees deserve the right to unionize if they so choose, but it will not solve any real problems. This thing is larger than Walmart, no matter how much of the Walton bloodline spills into the Forbes list of the most wealthiest. It is just a snapshot of a greater problem.
